ES Math: Procedures and Concepts

20

Dear parents,

Today’s presentation (Principal’s Coffee)  focused on mathematics in the elementary division. Math/Science Coach Shane Sullivan discussed the differences between procedural knowledge and conceptual knowledge. We looked at how SSIS teachers instruct with a balance of these two forms of knowledge and ways parents can assist students at home using a similar balance. Finally, we examined the role of language and communication skills in mathematics. We provided parents with helpful resources to use with their children at home to support their mathematical learning.

Toward the end of the presentation, we also had an interesting conversation about different forms of praise parents can use with their children and the effects of each type.

Thanks to all parents who attended this event.  We know it was a busy day with the grade 1 and 2 concert later in the day, and tonight’s Annual Report presentation.

Cheers,

Dan Keller
