Healthy Snacks and Lunch

92

Dear Parents:

We want to take this time to remind you that students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to school for morning break. A morning snack is provided for students in EC3/4 and Kindergarten. Please label the containers your child brings to school with their snack that includes: name, class and teacher’s name. This will help us return lost lunch boxes and containers to their rightful owner.

SSIS will encourage and support healthy eating to help promote optimal learning and lifelong health. Your support is appreciated.

Research has shown that eating healthier foods can “help children concentrate better in class, reduce behavioral problems, lower obesity rates, strengthen academic performance and build healthier habits for life”. (USDA). The World Health Organization also states that “Good nutrition-an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular physical activity-is a cornerstone of good health.

Recommended/Suggested healthy snacks  might include:

  • raw vegetable sticks
  • Fresh fruit
  • pasta salad/noodles
  • cheese and crackers/rice crackers
  • Kim Bap/Rice Balls
  • fresh spring rolls
  • Edamame
  • 100% juice, fresh milk, or water

Foods not allowed at school include:

  • carbonated drinks, soda pop
  • candy, lollipops, gum
  • Junk food

We will promote lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, and sugar-free dairy products. We discourage packaged, processed and high sugar foods (junk food).

As always we appreciate your support, and should you have additional questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher or stop in the office, my door is always open.

With appreciation,

Barbara Reynolds
