ES: Electronic device use before and after school

51

Dear Parents,

The question has been raised by many about the appropriate use of electronic devices (laptops, iPads, smart phones, etc.) before and after the elementary school day.  We are carefully trying to find a balance between encouraging students to use technology for learning, while at the same time, encouraging them to enjoy other forms of play.  Below is a table that explains the position we will be taking as an elementary school.

Time Supervision Device Usage Reason
Before School (7:30 – 7:45) The school provides supervision of students during this time. Not-permitted Laptops, iPads, and other devices were introduced as a learning tool, but the majority of usage during this time has been play.  Also, our school has committed to parents that we will supervise computer usage during the school day.  We do not commit to enough supervision of students during this 15 minute period.
After School (After 3:00) Parents provide supervision of their own children during this time, unless the child is participating in athletics or after-school activities. Permitted Parents are responsible for providing the appropriate supervision of their children during this time.

If students are using technology during the 7:30-7:45 period, we will ask them to stop using the device and explain that we do not commit to providing supervision of student usage during that time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards,

Dan Keller, PhD
