Dear SSIS Parents of Middle and High School Students –
Four robotics kits arrived last week as part of our plans to introduce new offerings in robotics next year. We have decided not to wait and to put them to use immediately.
This week we will kick off an intense, ten-day robotics competition as an introduction to the start of VEX robotics at SSIS next year. Application are now opening for 12 middle school students and 12 high school students to form two teams from each division. Coaches Mark Crowell (MS), Eric Schoonard (MS), and Evan Weinberg (HS) will guide them through an afterschool program of construction and testing, culminating in a public battle of the robots in our plaza on Friday afternoon, 26 May 2017.
Each team will consist of six students and we will limit this activity to four teams. Prior experience is not required to be part of this activity. If your son or daughter would like to participate, they should immediately send an email to one of our coaches for more information.
Teams will be announced by Thursday, 18 May 2017. Invited students will meet with the coaches to receive initial parts and instructions on Friday, 19 May 2017, immediately after early dismissal.
Participation in this month’s event will not affect a student’s opportunity to participate next year robotics competitions. We’re just excited to see what SSIS can do!
Sincerely yours,
Mark Sylte, Head of School
P. S. VEX EDR Robotics is an international competition between schools where students design, test, and compete with robots. Students learn many skills such as teamwork, project management, and critical thinking, all of which are applicable to careers in their future. SSIS is the first school in Vietnam to join this exciting competition.
