MS/HS: New Course for 2017-18: Jazz Ensemble (Vocal and Instrumental)

109

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for our music students in grades 7-12.  We are offering a morning Jazz Ensemble course that will be offered from 7-7:50am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Students who enroll will take this course as a regular class in addition to their normal schedule.  This class will show up on the transcript, will be graded, and will count as a Fine Arts credit for high school students.  Students who are interested in signing up should see their counselor.

This is a year-long course offering that gives students the opportunity to study instrumental or vocal jazz performance. This course is open to students in grades 7 through 12. It will be offered from 7-7:50 Monday-Thursday each week as a regular course.  Students will rehearse and perform in a variety of ensembles including trios, jazz combos and big bands with an emphasis on learning improvisation. Different historical styles will be studied, analyzed and performed in order to let the student discover their own way of expressing themselves in the jazz idiom. Grade 7 and 8 students must be granted permission by the MS music teacher in order to be a participant in the course.  All students must have previous music experience either in or out of school.  Students are expected to perform in a ensemble at least four times in the year.
