What a great week at the Middle School! Major events for this week included: 1. Start of MS basketball for girls and boys. We have 46 boys and 32 girls dribbling, passing, and shooting on the basketball court. You can check the Athletics and Activities website for more information about practice schedules and game schedules. 2. Start of MS Swimming for girls and boys. 24 Middle School student dove into to swim team this week. With early morning practices, these athletes are really making a commitment to SSIS. Again, you can check the Athletics and Activities website for practice and game schedules. 3. PTA Coffee and New Parent Orientation were held on Friday, August 22nd. Thank you to all the parents who attended this event. We shared information about PowerSchool, Moodle, and School Calendars. We highlighted that all of these programs have apps or can be subscribed to so that information is sent directly to your phone. Coming Events: Next week the Middle School will host Back to School Night on Thursday, August 28th from 6-7:30. Parents and students are invited to attend. The night will begin with a presentation in the Auditorium. Following the presentation, parents and students will move from class to class meeting teachers and learning about the curriculum. We hope to see you and your children there. On Wednesday and Thursday next week, all Middle School students will participate in the Fall Writing Sample. On Wednesday, students will create their first draft. On Thursday, students will revise and complete their final draft. This writing will be analyzed using the writing continuum. The data we collect will be used to help us design instruction specifically targeted to our students’ strengths and needs. On Wednesday next week, students will be given information about ASA offerings for the year. Students will be sent home with descriptions of the Season 1 offerings. Parents are requested to look this over and help their children select activities of interest. Students can register online starting Wednesday night on the Athletics and Activities website. Next week also brings us our Student Council class representative elections. 3 representatives will be elected for each grade level. Information can be found on the Moodle announcements as well as in an email sent to students. This is an excellent way to get involved in student government.

This morning, the Grade 3 students launched their SuperUnit by "walking in the shoes" of someone who works at SSIS. Students learned about jobs like: the Admissions Director, a Gardener, an Assistant Principal, a PE Teacher, and so many more!
In one case, Annie, Han-Bee, and Apolline followed Mr. Nesmith (our Marketing Producer) through what it's like to find an interesting story on campus, compile video footage, record a Voice Over, select music, and share the story on the Internet.
Stay tuned: pics from many other different SSIS jobs to come!
