Dear Parents of Rising Grade 6 (Current Grade 5) Students,

Now that the second semester is underway, we are looking ahead at your child’s transition to middle school for the 2023-2024 school year. This is a very exciting time for you and your child!

Rising Grade 6 Parent/Student Information Night
Thursday, March 2, 6:30 – 7:30 pm in the Auditorium

To support our current grade 5 families in the transition to middle school, we would like parents and students to join us on March 2, from 6:30 – 7:30 pm, for our Rising Grade 6 Parent/Student Info Night. During this event, you will learn all about the middle school program at SSIS. We will also help parents and students complete course registration for the 2023-2024 school year. We are hoping for 100% attendance at this very important information night.

On February 28, we will be sending more information and resources home about course selection. We will also be meeting with all grade 5 classes on February 28 to provide an introduction to middle school and the transition process.

Even More Transition to Middle School Events

After the Rising Grade 6 Parent/Student Info Night on March 2, we will have several more experiences to help your child get excited and comfortable about their move to middle school.

To know what we are planning, please look at the following transition activity plan:

Month Activity
May House League T-Shirt Design Contest

Students will learn about the middle school house leagues and then vote on the designs to represent each house league for the 2023-24 school year!

May Student Body Elections

Students will learn about the middle school student council (StuCo). They will hear speeches from candidates hoping to serve on the 2023-24 StuCo executive board. Then they will vote for the candidates they think are best suited to serve as next year’s middle school president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary.

May Step Up Day

Grade 5 students will come to middle school and spend time with some of their future grade 6 teachers. Step Up Day will include a tour of middle school, a house league event, a question/answer session, and time to see what it is like to be in middle school.

August Orientation Day

Your child will meet their grade 6 advisor and gather with other 6th graders in their advisory group. There will be time for meaningful connections and learning how to navigate the first few days of middle school.

August and Beginning of September Dragon Days

This is a 3-week program led by your child’s grade 6 advisor. During Dragon Days, students will take part in a variety of learning activities to help them build relationships, skills, and understandings to help their first year in middle school be great!

I look forward to seeing you at the Rising Grade 6 Parent/Student Info Night on March 2!

Sincerely,

Molly Burger
