297

Dear ES Parents,

You are warmly invited to attend your child’s Learning Journey on Friday, March 26. The children are excited and proud to share their learning with their families, and we thank you for being part of this important event. If you have not yet scheduled your appointment, please do so here (additional instructions on scheduling your appointment can be found further down on this page).

What Is a Learning Journey?

A Learning Journey is a special time for children to share and reflect on their progress at school with parents. The Learning Journey is led by your child and lasts about 90 minutes. It is divided into two parts:

  • 60 minutes for classroom discussion (scheduled)
  • 30 minutes to visit specialists’ classrooms (unscheduled). Families should visit the specialists right before or right after the classroom visit. Specialists will be available from 7:45 am to 11:15 am and 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

You will find detailed information about Learning Journeys, below.

Child Care Service

So that students can present their Learning Journey to their parents without the distraction of siblings, SSIS will provide supervision of school-age children at the elementary playground area during the Learning Journey times. If you want to make use of this service, please bring your child’s sibling to the playground 10 minutes before the start of the Learning Journey.

How To Schedule an Appointment

Sign-ups must be made through SchoolsBuddy. They will close Friday, March 19 at 9:00 am. Appointments are available on a “first-come-first-serve” basis, so we recommend scheduling your appointment as soon as possible to get the time you want.

To schedule your appointment, go here: SchoolsBuddy Login Page

For step-by-step instructions go to SSIS Link by clicking here.

If You Do Not Have a SchoolsBuddy Account

We look forward to seeing you on March 26!

Sincerely,

More on Learning Journeys

A Learning Journey is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to see how their child has progressed within the classroom environment. It is a special time for your child to reflect on, celebrate and share his/her progress with you.

This is not a time to have a parent-teacher conference.  If you would like to have a longer discussion with the teacher, please contact them by email to arrange for a separate appointment.

What is My Child’s Role in the Learning Journey?

Your child will escort you around the classroom. He or she will talk to you about what s/he has learned and share the work completed at school. Your child will share his/her work with you and perhaps “teach” you a few classroom activities. Remember: Your child leads the Learning Journey!

What is My Role as a Parent During the Learning Journey?

Your primary role during the Learning Journey is to give your child your undivided attention. Ask questions about your child’s work and learning environment and respond positively to your child’s efforts in school. Families are encouraged to use their own language during the Learning Journey.

What is the Teacher’s Role During the Learning Journey?

Teachers will assist and support the children in preparing for their Learning Journeys. They will set up the classroom environment to facilitate the process of the Learning Journey and be available to support families if necessary.

Learning Journeys are not the time for families to ask teachers about their child’s progress in school.  If parents are interested in having a separate conference with teachers, please contact them by email to arrange for an appointment.

What are the Benefits of Learning Journeys?

Learning Journeys give children the opportunity to share and celebrate their learning in a comfortable setting and to take a leading role in the learning and assessment process. The children take pride in sharing their classroom and the work they’ve completed, and they gain confidence and oral language skills as they communicate their learning with others.

Learning Journeys give parents a wonderful opportunity to see, hear and experience school through their children’s eyes. During their visit, parents will be able to see first-hand what and how their children learn in school.

Teachers welcome the increased involvement by parents and students and provide the support and means for children to successfully take the lead during Learning Journeys.

Specialist Classes and Learning Journeys

Students may take parents to their various specialist teacher classes to share their work with parents. Please ask your child to lead you to their specialist classes.

Please schedule an additional 30 minutes before or after your scheduled Learning Journey appointment to visit your child’s specialist teachers.

What Happens After the Learning Journey?

You will be asked to reflect on your child’s Learning Journey and to complete a feedback questionnaire. Please return the feedback on the following day. As always, if there are questions or concerns on your part about your child’s progress, direct contact with the teachers should be made after the Learning Journey day.

Thank you for your support in this important process. We are confident that you will enjoy celebrating your child’s achievements in this way and look forward to welcoming you to our classroom!
