Dear Parents of Students in Grade 5,

The second semester is well underway. As such, we are now looking ahead at your child’s learning program for the 2022-2023 school year and the various options that will be available to them.

In addition to the core set of Grade 6 courses, your child will further customize their SSIS learning experience by choosing a language (Mandarin or Spanish), English as an Additional Language (EAL), or Learning Support (LS), as well as elective courses.

Rising Grade 6 Parent Info Night, Tuesday, March 1, from 6:45 – 7:30 pm

On Tuesday, March 1, from 6:45 – 7:30 pm you are invited to our Parent Info Night to learn about the middle school program. After the event, which will be held on Zoom, you will understand how to help your child make the best course choices for the next school year.

Transitioning to Middle School

In addition to educating your child about the middle school program, we have several experiences planned for them to get them excited and comfortable about the transition. We will share exact dates in March, on the Middle School Parent/Student Google calendar.

So that you can get an idea of what’s coming up, please have a look at the following transition activity plan.

Month Activity
May House League T-Shirt Contest:

Students learn about middle school house leagues and get to vote on the designs that will represent each house in the 2021-2022 school year!

May Student Body Elections:

Students learn about the middle school student council. They will hear speeches from candidates hoping to serve on the 2021-2022  executive board. They will also vote for the candidates they think are best suited to serve as next year’s middle school president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary.

May Step Up Day:

Grade 5 students will come to middle school and spend time with some of their future Grade 6 teachers. This visit will include a tour, a house league event, a question/answer session, and time to see what it’s like to be in middle school.

August Orientation Day:

Your child will meet their Grade 6 advisor and gather with other 6th graders assigned to their group. There will be time for meaningful connections and to learn how to navigate the first few days of middle school.

August and Beginning of September Dragon Days:

This is a 3 week program guided by your child’s Grade 6 advisor. During this time students engage in a variety of learning experiences to help them build the relationships, skills and understandings that will help their first year in middle school be a great one!

I look forward to seeing you at the March 1st parent night!

Sincerely,

Roxanne Amor-Ross
MS Dean of Students
